Nombreux sont les artistes qui se sont saisi d'archives pour figurer un univers, qu'il soit individuel (Christian Boltanski, Vera Frenkel) ou collectif (IRWIN, Ilya Kabakov), quand d'autres portent un regard sur cette activité (Maurizio Nannucci) ou produisent du fait même de leur activité artistique quotidienne un matériel d'archive qui peut basculer vers un statut esthétique, c'est-à-dire devenir une œuvre (Artur Barrio, Gilles Mahé, Gérard Collin-Thiébaut, Gilbert & George). Les travaux d'artistes sur le Web (David Boeno, George Legrady) ou sur CD-Rom enfin, mettent en œuvre des archives numérisées que le lecteur-visiteur est invité à parcourir ou à compléter. Il s'agit donc sans objectif problématique a priori de cerner la façon dont ces artistes ont développé leurs œuvres avec l'archive comme objet, comme méthode, comme image ou comme poétique et de voir ce que cette relation à l'archive produit ou induit.
